Why do I need to pay attention to the Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards?

Nearly every week we hear about data breaches and identity theft in the news. The cost to businesses is huge and rising. Criminals actively target merchants and retailers for two reasons:

1. Availability: Vast quantities of information, including payment card numbers and personal data required to use them, pass through merchant’s hands every hour.
2. Accessibility: Criminals know that good security controls are often not in place at the merchant level.

PCI standards were developed to ensure good security controls are in place and compliance with PCI standards is a requirement for all businesses (large and small) that process, store or transmit payment card information.
